DTM HOCKENHEIM - 2021

DTM HOCKENHEIM – 2021

This was a round full of drama and emotion but it ended with Liam regaining the lead in the DTM Championship by 14-points.

He qualified on the second row of the grid for both races – 3rd and 4th.

Avoiding the early round carnage in the first race, he maintained his 3rd position until the very last lap when retiring DTM driver Mike Rockenfeller (Audi), charging through the field on newer tyres after a late race pitstop, barged his way past Liam’s Ferrari in panel crunching fashion. Liam’s AF Corse teammate Alex Albon finished 2nd after a similar late race pitstop and fresher tyres.

Liam crossed the finish line 4th and ended the day tied in the championship lead on 188 points with Kelvin van der Linde (Audi).

Van der Linde again bagged pole for Race 2 but was shuffled back into the clutches of Liam over the opening laps. The pair traded places for 2rd before the South African driver was penalised for a heavy shunt into the back of Liam’s car and copped a 5-second penalty. A further 5-second penalty for a pit-stop infringement was added on to his race time and he dropped to 10th.

Liam finished 2nd behind Lucas Auer Mercedes in the final race and with it retook the championship lead, 208 points to 192 going into the final round at Norisring.

The record now 9 podiums from 14 races.
