F2 SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS - 2022
The first of Liam’s double-duty weekends took place at Spa when F2 racing was coupled with his first F1 Free Practice session of the season with Scuderia AlphaTauri. The Spa circuit is the longest of the F1 calendar at 7.00kms
Liam headed into F2 qualifying immediately after his FP1 session. After the first run Liam was P3 and on the second set of tyres he was looking good for probably P2 when, first the car’s engine management suddenly went into limp mode briefly after hitting a bump on the circuit, and then he had to brake to avoid a spinning Marcus Armstrong in front of him. That dropped him to P6 by the end of the session
From P5 in the Sprint race Liam was soon in the lead and after building up a healthy gap. A late Safety Car after his Carlin teammate Logan Sargeant crashed stripped that away. While others dived into pit lane to fit soft tyres for a late charge, Liam stayed out. Unfazed, he led from the restart and managed to pull away once again and stay ahead to take his third win of the season in what the news headlines said: ‘Lawson in a league of his own after a dramatic final lap showdown’. He also recorded the fastest race lap on his final tour.
A second podium in the Feature race, 3rd, gave Liam a solid points haul for the weekend and his first double podium result since the opening round at Bahrain. The third place finish in the Feature race could have been better if not for a slow pit stop.
